Army troops foil another landmining attack in Comval

MONKAYO, Compostela Valley Province (May 9) – Army troops foiled another landmining attack by the member of the Organized Crime Group – New People’s Army (OCG-NPA) along Brgy. Olaycon Highway , Monkayo, Compostela Valley Province .

Lt. Col. Cesar Molina, commander of 25th Infantry Battalion, said members of the Peace and Development Team immediately acted upon receiving the reports from peace and development volunteers, a community based watch group in the area.

He said that upon arriving in the area, responding troops saw two unidentified men fleeing from the area.

After searching, they discovered that a landmine was laid near the national highway of said barangay.

Government troops immediately secured the area.

“We have a witness who revealed that said individuals belong to OCG-NPA known to have been operating in the hinterlands of Casoon, Monkayo Comval,” Molina disclosed.

He condemned the action of the OCGs stating that said act is an indication of their disrespect on the prohibition of the use of landmine.

He said that the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), which was signed by the CPP/NPA/NDF with the Government of the Philippines, not only prohibits the use of landmine, but it compels both parties to protect the people.

However, the bold action of planting a landmine is a testament to the insincerity of CPP/NPA/NDF.

“The cooperation of civilians and the immediate response of our troops foiled another landmining attack that may have brought misfortune to passing motorists,” he said.

Molina said that the employment of PDTs is helping the local government Monkayo, Montevista and Compostela, in the conduct of Rapid Needs Assessment, in convergence of Peace and Development Outreach Program (PDOP), in order to identify projects that will alleviate the living condition of the local populace, and ultimately bring peace and development in the area.
