MATI, DAVAO ORIENTAL—The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental
rolled out relief aid to thefamilies who have been affected by a huge fire
that broke out yesterday afternoon at Quezon Street, Poblacion in the City of
Mati.
Last December 14, the Provincial Government immediately responded
bringing the affected families cooked meals and food packs. Each food packs
contained 6 kilos of rice and 6 cans of sardines. The Philippine Red Cross also
distributed sleeping kits to the victims.
Last night’s distribution will be followed by another wave of
distribution today as truckloads of blankets and cooking wares, such as pots,
ladles, and other kitchen utensils were sent by the Department of Social
Welfare and Development here. ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya also turned over to the
Provincial Social Welfare Office sacks of used clothes.
Also, to be distributed todayby the Provincial Government is an
initial cash assistance of P10,000 for each family affected.
Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon, during her visitto the victims at
the evacuation center in Barangay Centrallast night, offered her sympathies to
the families affected. She told them to be strong. She also assured them that
the provincial government will continue to work with the City Government of
Mati to ensure that their lives will be rebuilt and all necessary assistance
will be provided.
She said that the Provincial Government is also working to help
families settle on a permanent relocation site.
According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
Office, as of the latest report, 149 families totally lost their homes or more
than 600 individuals affected. No fatalities were reported and all those who
were injured were given immediate medical care.
As of writing, no cause of fire was officially stated.(Karen Lou
