Authorities urge to intensify campaign against rabies



DAVAO CITY, Dec 19 (PIA) Authorities warned against the prevalent of rabies cases in the city reaching at ten incidents as of November, 2014.

Speaking at the Rabies Awareness Forum, Dr. Rafael Mercado, assistant director of the Department of Agriculture 11 revealed that out of the 1,954 rabies cases sent to various bite centers in the country, 552 turned out positive, 35 percent caused by dog bites.

He said that aside from Davao City, Quezon City also registered 24 cases this year.

“Be a responsible pet-owners,” Mercado pointed out.

He said that it is cheaper for pets to be immunized at Thirty Five Pesos to Fifty Pesos per vaccine than buying the anti-rabies vaccine for humans.

Dr. Abdullah Dumama, Jr., regional director of the Department of Health in Davao Region urged all sectors to help eliminate rabies by 2016.

He said that Davao Region can be declared only as rabies free if it will not register rabies cases for two years.

Dumama also batted for responsible pet ownership where dogs and cats undergo corresponding registration and vaccination. (PIA-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
