IGaCoS holds Climate Change Adaptation Seminar

ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL- To heighten understanding and awareness on climate change, the City Mayor’s Office – Public Information Section and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division conducted Climate Change Adaptation Seminar, slogan and poster making to local government office representatives.

The activity was dubbed as Department Info-Point Person (DIPPs) and selected high school students  from Babak, Samal and Kaputian on December 1-2.

The DIPPs are the information arm of the City Mayor’s Office- Public Information Division in the different departments of the local government  particularly in providing updates to the City Mayor on the office activities as well as in the gathering and dissemination of information to co-employees and barangay constituents.

The seminar for the DIPPs and high school students hopes to enhance their awareness on climate change; adaptation, preparedness and mitigation strategies and solutions. Specifically, the activity aims to provide better understanding of climate change causes and effects ,  greenhouse gases accumulated in the atmosphere due to human activities and rapid industrialization and understanding reasons on the causes of occurrence of various calamities.

 “Education is adaptation” , Project Officer for the Environment Education Unit of World Wild Fund for Nature – Philippines and resource person of the climate change  seminar, Ruthie Maye Padilla said.

Padilla said their organization spearheads practical solutions to help the country adapt to climate change, secure food and water resources, switch to renewable energy sources and infuse sustainability into the lives and businesses of Filipinos. She said their organization’s mission is to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature.

The climate change seminar for DIPPs and high school students expected to enhance understanding and adaptation of participants on climate change and be able to formulate slogans and posters about the topic which will be developed as advocacy materials for distribution to barangays, schools and offices in Island Garden City of Samal.

The first day of the seminar were  for the DIPPs  wherein they were given lecture on climate change and brief input on slogan making. On the second  day, this for the high school students, wherein they were given input on climate change and brief input on poster making and they were asked to produce a poster out of the slogans prepared by the DIPPs as their output on the first day of the seminar.

The local government has been taking steps to cope with the changes brought about by  climate change  preparedness, mitigation, response and development of  vital  policies. (Samal CIO)
