Comval film wins big at 10th Mindanao Film Festival



DAVAO CITY--- An independent short film from Nabunturan, Compostela Valley province copped the best picture plum at the 10th Mindanao Film Festival.

"Pasuon." (Greed) an indie film about a hunter who discovers gold in a mountain stream and the tragic events that followed, won also the award for best cinematography aside from gathering nominations for Best Sound, Best Musical Score, Best Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Actor and Best Director.

The awards night  were held last December 8 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Cinema 6 which also served as the theatrical screening venue for the 68 films which participated in the film festival- the longest running regional film festival in the country.

Pasuon is one of the films from Nabunturan which were entered into the festival. It was entered in the recent Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition (Nabilfilmex) a project of the local government of Nabunturan and the Muncipal Tourism Council.

Filmmaker Bryan Jimenez who helmed the winning film said the story was inspired from the discovery of gold in Mt. Diwata, a well-known gold mining site situated in the province. 

Jimenez said he had to combed the remote vastness of Barangay Magsaysay in Nabunturan to scout for the film locations. The local barangay government also assisted in the shoot. "I really wanted to produce a local story and the same time show the beauty of Nabunturan." Jimenez said. 

Meanwhile the short film The End of War produced in  Cagayan de Oro and which revolves around a Moro family caught between the crossfire of government troops and secessionist rebels also copped several awards. 

The End of War managed to win Best Director (Joe Bacus) and Best Sound awards. Another Comval short film  titled "Pahiyom ni Boye." (The Smile of Boye) about a school and its positive impact to the host indigenous community won best production design and best musical score awards. (PIA/RG Alama)
