TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, Dec. 1
– The Province of Davao del Norte stepped up its effort in enhancing and
conserving marine biodiversity through the
rehabilitation of degraded marine habitats.
About five hundred students,
teachers, residents, local officials and Ugmad Komunidad beneficiaries planted
over a thousand mangrove seedlings in Barangay Cagangohan, Panabo City to
restore the coastal environment.
Governor Rodolfo del Rosario led the
planting of mangrove specie Rhizophora apiculata aimed at bringing
back the diverse coastal habitats that support an abundance of marine life in
the area.
“This will be the best legacy that I
could leave to future generations of Dabaonons,” the governor said.
The Davao del Norte Coastal
Biodiversity Protection and Conservation Program intends to cover over five
hectares in the coastal area to rehabilitate the marine ecosystem and ensure
sustainable economic growth.
It is being undertaken through the
convergence of the Ugmad Komunidad program, the Environment and Wildlife
Protection and Development division of the PENRO-LGU and the Provincial
Agriculturist Office.
The governor also launched the
Provincial Coastal Nursery for marine conversation efforts. Around 7,000
mangrove seedlings will be available for planting by January next year.
The event also aims to spur
ecotourism activities in the area, which has become more accessible with
the concreting of the coastal circumferential road of Panabo City along
barangays San Pedro-Cagangohan section.
The 17.4-kilometer road project
worth over P300 million which includes the construction of concrete seawall and
embankment is implemented by the Departments of Tourism and Public Works and
Highways.
It has greatly improved the movement
of goods, particularly in the nearby Mariculture Park that has been benefitting
a lot of fisher folks in the city.
