DAVAO DEL NORTE, December 17 (PIA) - - A team advocating climate
change mitigation and adaptation visited recently two schools in the Davao del
Norte and Davao Oriental.
Personnel from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
(PAGASA) oriented the students of ACES Polytechnic College in Panabo City,
Davao del Norte and Badas National High School in Mati City, Davao Oriental
about climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Efren Elbanbuena, regional director of PIA XI, said that as
young as the students, they should be a part of fighting the effects of climate
change.
“There’s a lot that you can do by just merely planting fruits
trees, proper solid waste management and even the 4Rs (recycle, reuse, reduce
and recovery) that were taught in the school,” Elbanbuena said.
He further gave the students insights on downstream effects of a
changing Philippine climate like lower production in agriculture, worsening
health issues, unstable energy supply and depleting marine resources.
Yon Maybuena, information officer of Mati City, also urged the
students to use the knowledge they gain from the schools to create a better
community adaptable to climate change.
“It is not enough na may alam, dapat tayong maki-alam sa
pagsugpo ng climate change. (It is not enough to know, instead we should take
part in fighting climate change.),” said Maybuena.
Meanwhile, Gerry Pedrico, PAGASA XI senior meteorologist,
explained the hazards and gave tips dunring hydrometeorological events like
thunderstorms, cyclones and typhoons.
The team also will visit schools in Compostela Valley and Davao
del Sur early next year. (PIA11, Michael Uy)
