Tropical storm 'Amang' expected to move closer to the Bicol region –PAGASA

Tropical storm "Amang" is expected to move closer to the Bicol region and continue to bring rains over parts of Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA weather forecaster Denison Estareja said that as of 4 p.m., the tropical storm was estimated based on all available data at 765 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar (11.7ºN, 132.7ºE), packed with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move west-northwest at 19 kph.

Estareja said that with it current movement, once tropical storm "Amang" moves closer to the Bicol region, there is a possibility of raising public storm warning signals over Catanduanes, Northern Samar and Camarines Norte in the next six hours.

Estareja said the other scenario is for the tropical storm to make a recurve, in which case there is possibility for it to weaken due to the presence of the northeast monsoon.

He said there is slim chance for the storm to make landfall in the country. However, it will bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over parts of Eastern Visayas and Caraga region until Saturday.

He also said that due to the extended cloudiness of storm "Amang," some parts of Luzon, including Calabarzon and Metro Manila, will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers on Sunday.

In the next 24 hours, Estareja said the northeast monsoon continues affecting Luzon as Cagayan Valley will be cloudy with light rains while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated light rains.

In its 5 p.m. advisory (January 15), PAGASA said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to north will prevail over Mindanao and the eastern section of the Visayas and from the northeast over the rest of the country with moderate to rough seas.

The state-run weather bureau also issued a gale warning due to the combined effects of the northeast monsoon and storm "Amang" as the sea condition will be rough to very rough due to strong to gale force winds which are expected to affect the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

”Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” it warned. (PNA)
