DAVAO DEL NORTE, January 15 (PIA) - - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) based in this province initiated the establishment of commercial tree plantations of Falcata in New Corella.

Orly Cariazo, provincial director of DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), revealed in an interview that Falcata are grown commercially in 173 hectares of land in New Corella.

“The project has been coordinated well with the wood processing plants (WPPs), who financed P-20,000 per hectare for the plantation, which will cover expenses from the creation of the nursery to seedling production to maintenance of the farm.” Cariazo said.

“In the end, these WPPs will be market of the growers,” he continued.

He further disclosed that under the Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) program, two people’s organizations were chosen to implement the plantation.

The identified people’s organizations were El Salvador Farmers and tree Planters Integrated Cooperative and SAWAWON Tee Planters Association, both from New Corella.

“The project resolves not only the issues on climate change and illegal logging but it also creates livelihood in the community,” Cariazo added.

Meanwhile, Cariazo also boasted on the province’s contribution on the TreeVolution conducted last September 26, 2014.

According to the TreeVolution report, Davao del Norte got the highest accomplishment rating of 82% besting other provinces in the region.

He acknowledged that strong support of Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario was one of the main reason for the success of the simultaneous tree planting in the province.

“Because of Gov. Del Rosario, local government units with or without planting sites have showed their cooperation in the activity,” he said. (PIA11, Michael Uy)
