DILG Sec Roxas urges HS studes to avail of S&T scholarship

TAGUM CITY,  Davao del Norte, July 10 (PIA): Interior and Local Government Sec. Mar Roxas enjoins local government chief executives from the provincial to the municipal levels to encourage senior secondary students to avail of  the science and technology (S&T) scholarship program.

Roxas  aired his call through a memorandum  dated July 1 sent to field offices of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), directing regional directors, the local chief executives including the regional governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to widely disseminate information on S&T scholarships.

He made as basis of his call the announcement of the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Education Institute  (DOST-SEI) regarding the  opening for application of its Undergraduate Scholarship Programs offered to “talented and deserving students who wish to pursue four-to-five year courses in priority S&T fields” in selected higher education institutions in the country.

This runs in line with Republic Act 7687 otherwise known as An Act Instituting A Science and Technology Scholarship Program and other purposes or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994.

Roxas  explained that RA 7687  and the Merit Scholarships aim to produce and develop high quality human resources “who will man the S&T and Research and Development efforts in the country.

The Undergraduate Scholarship Program is now open to qualified secondary senior students, including high school graduates who have not undertaken any college units.

The deadline for filing of application is on August 23, 2013  and the nationwide conduct of the DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination is on September 22, 2013.

Roxas announced that the privileges of such scholarship include tuition and other school fees, monthly stipend, book allowance, among other benefits.

Interested applicants can get forms and scholarship brochures at the SEI, 2 floor Science Heritage Building, DOST Compound, Bicutan, Taguig City or through DOST regional offices, or the provincial S & T centers or  at the offices of the House of Representatives and Senators.
