Former peace panel member calls on the public to wait for Mamasapano incident inquiry

DAVAO CITY, Feb 2 (PIA) Former government peace panel member Ednar Dayanghirang urged the public to wait for the investigation on the Mamasapano incident before passing judgment on the persons responsible and accountable for the botched police operation.

Speaking to reporters at the Kapehan sa SM City, he said that there are sectors which will dig deeper on the issue, one is the Special Investigation Task Group formed by the police, the probe initiated by the two houses of Congress, civil society groups, international third-party-group of delegates and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Dayanghirang said the operation Sunday which left 44 police commandos and two civilians dead, and 12 police officers wounded was legitimate since the authorities were only enforcing a court order to arrest two wanted terrorists in the area.

“They were there neither to attack the Moro Islamic Liberation Front nor the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters but to enforce a court order to arrest wanted international terrorists Marwan and Basit Usman,” he said.

Dayanghirang even congratulated the fallen SAF for neutralizing Marwan who shot it out with the authorities.

He assured that the government is working to give justice to the victims of this incident.

Dayanghirang also expressed alarm to personalities who were making rounds in radio stations in Metro Manila conveying their opinions on the incident without getting the facts first.

“I urge the public to be more discerning on appreciating the news,” he said.

Dayanghirang was a member for years of the government peace panel which negotiated peace with the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front-New People's Army.

Dayanghirang believes only the pursuit of the peace process that will bring a lasting peace in Mindanao.
He stressed that going to war with the rebels is no longer an option in the area which already suffered so much because of the conflict.

“We have to learn a lot of lessons from the Mamasapano incident and we need these lessons to strengthen more the Bangsamoro Basic Law to ensure a more comprehensive peace in the community,” Dayanghirang said. (PIA 11-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
