IGACOS campus journalists cited in Regional Schools Press Conference



ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, February 16, 2015 - Journalists  of  Island Garden City of Samal  sailed home with  bacons of recognition  as they won in the different events in  the recently-concluded  Regional Schools Press Conference last February 5-7, 2015 at the University of Immaculate Concepcion, Bajada, Davao City. Anchored on the theme:” Empowering Resilient Communities through  Responsible Campus Journalism”.

Immeasurable joy was traced on the faces of school paper advisers who optimized the power of pen to the hearts of their pupil writers. Overwhelmed with extreme bliss that at the moment they are now reaping such bountiful harvest of their effort from day 1 of training to the time of competition.

The winners from Secondary level are: Armando Adlawan Jr. who bagged 1st Place in Science and Technology Writing English Category and Jeziah Rabbi Salvar won 2nd Place in Editorial Cartooning English Category under the coaching of CharizmaL. Ambrona of Nieves Villarica national High School. Jaira Mae C. Mondez, 1st Place in Copy Reading and Headline Writing English Category with coach Romeo Montois and Mariel Jane Estrera, 2nd Place in Photojournalism English Category with coachMaricar Palacio. Both are from Kaputian National High School. Glydel Mae Babatuan, 4th Place in Science and Technology  Writing Filipino Category with Lorna Dumadapat as her coach of Sta. Cruz National High School. For group events, Nieves Villarica National High School grabbed 5th Place in Scriptwriting and Radio Broadcasting English Category, Jesse Reuben Salvar- 5th Place in Best in Technical Application trained by Charizma L. Ambrona and 5th Place in Best in Science and Technology Page Filipino Category-AngVillarican with their adviser Penie O. Varquez.

For the elementary level: Philip Jayson L. Lestojas, 1st Place in Editorial Writing Filipino Category with Rene Bee Antoinette B. Banggat as coach.  Shan Kyza L. Rebarbas- 2nd Place in Science and Technology Writing English Category honed  by Eric A. Bordios. Both are writers and advisers from Angel VillaricaCentral  Elementary School. John Laurence R. Mendoza with coach Kenneth C. Nuñez won 3rd Place in Editorial Cartooning Filipino Category of Peñaplata Central Elementary School SPED Center. JannahVia T. Capilitan won 5th Place in Photojournalism English Category trained by Lira S. Rubio of San Agustin Elementary School.

The said event was spearheaded by Dr. Chona M. Calatrava, Division English Coordinator and Lourdes C. Manlapus, Education Program Supervisor in Filipino.

According to Eric A. Bordios, one of the coaches, “After eight long years of being a school paper adviser, the elusive National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) is already in my very hands...truly, our time will come if we just work hard for it. NSPC TAGUIG CITY we are coming!”

The said competition was participated by ten (10) divisions of Region XI including IGACOS. Campus journalists competed onthe different individual and group events persistent to win and grabbed such opportunity to represent Region XI in the National Schools Press Conference to be held in Taguig City, Manila.(Lira S.
