ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMALl, February 16, 2015 - In response to
DILG Officer (CLGOO) Rosario Laid’s call, various religious leaders both from
the Catholic Church and members of Samal Island Ministerial Fellowship (SIMFEL)
gathered once again for a meeting at the DILG Office on January 9 and organized
a body for good governance especially during election.
The project is aimed at stopping vote buying which has become so
rampant that the city has been tagged as one among the highest cases in vote
buying and it has been observed that both the people and the candidates point
their fingers at each other on who will stop the vote buying practice.
The different religious leaders and personalities expressed that
they have been praying for quite some time that a project on good governance
will evolve and with the advent of the Focolare, a group who help initiate the
program on New Politics, assisted the realization of organizing the
religious leaders who named themselves as Guardians of Good Governance
and Development of IGaCoS or 3G-New Politics.
CLGOO Laid said that the initiative supports the memorandum
circular of DILG Secretary Mar Roxas who called the religious
sector to come out and be involved in seeing to it that there is good
governance in the local government units.
During the series of meetings with religious leaders, CLGOO Laid
said majority expressed positive response to the purpose of the organization
and they came up with measures and steps to ensure the election of good leaders
while the others assured support and are hopeful of its sustainability
and success.
Initially, the group identified some criteria and test for
nominees and planned out action to intensify information and education of
masses in the upcoming election.
Pastor Larry Rodriguez, one of the originators of the 3G –New
Politics, emphasized that their moves are not against any politicians or
group but they act as guardians for the development of Samal by
ensuring that good leaders will be elected.
