Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Mar Roxas lauded Samar Youth advocates for committing their strength and skills to disaster preparedness efforts in the province.
During the closing program of the WEmboree (WE in a Jamboree) Assembly on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) in Catbalogan, Samar, Roxas met with the Samar youth, who were trained and oriented by the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) about DILG's Oplan Listo, the operational checklist of local government units in times of disaster.
Roxas felt proud to inspire "first responders" from the youth sector, a force multiplier to the National Government Frontline Team which consists of Local Government Units (LGUs), Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
The participants of the jamboree also formed the Western Samar Youth Advocates For Resilience and Environmentalism (We SYARE) organization to further promote disaster preparedness among other youth.
"Tandaan natin ‘yan na hindi tayo solo flight. We 'SYARE,' ibig sabihin hindi lang ako, di lang ang kaibigan ko, pero pati ang buong komunidad," Roxas said.
We SYARE also vowed to work hand in hand with the LGUs and civil society in Samar by conducting activities that will raise the awareness, knowledge, attitude, and practice of Samar residents on disaster preparedness and management.
It can be recalled that Roxas and the National Government Frontline Team were present in Eastern Visayas to manage disaster response operations during the havoc of typhoons Yolanda and Ruby.
"Mahirap na nalilito tayo. Kung hindi natin alam ang gagawin natin, baka kababayan natin ang nalalagay sa alanganin. Baka dumami ang mga casualties. Kaya maging LISTO po tayo. Alamin natin kung ano ang gagawin," Roxas said.(DILG)
