Davao Region to commemorate the World Day against Child Labor

DAVAO CITY, June 8 (PIA) Government and Civil Society Organizations will commemorate Wednesday, June 10 the 13th World Day against Child Labor aimed at enhancing awareness and eliminating the malpractice in the community level.

Atty. Jeoffrey Suyao, director of the Department of Labor and Employment in Davao Region said the activity which is dubbed as HELP ME will be preceded by a motorcade starting from the Freedom Park at Roxas Avenue and will culminate with a short program in a mall at J.P. Laurel Avenue.

He said HELP ME was established and designed in 2013 to assist local government in creating child-labor free communities.

“The World Day against Child Labor is observed every 12th day of June, an International Labor Organization-sanctioned holiday for the purpose of raising awareness and activism to prevent child labor.  The ILO created this observance in 2002 with the Philippines concurring the celebration every year,” Suyao said.
He said this year, the local campaign against child labor is anchored on the theme,” Not to Child Labor, Yes to Quality Education.”

Suyao said that in Davao Region, 114,000 child laborers were noted by the ILO in 2011 placing the area in the top bottom position.

He said with the cooperation of the government and the private sector the figure reduced significantly with the implementation of the HELP ME convergence program.

HELP ME stands for Health, Education and Training; Livelihood, Prevention, Protection and Prosecution and Monitoring and Evaluation with implementing agencies like the DOLE, Department of Justice, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, National Economic and Development Authority, City Social Services and Development Office, Philippine Information Agency and non-government organizations.  (PIA 11-Joey Sem G.
