DOST hones global potential of PH Halal industry in upcoming int’l event

Over 1500 delegates from some 40 countries around the world will converge in Manila to participate in the Philippine Halal Assembly, International Conference and Expo on June 03-05, 2015 at the Manila Mariott Hotel in Pasay City.

According to Dr. Zenaida P. HR Laidan, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology-XII which hosts the event, the Assembly focuses on the development of the country’s Halal industry. Foremost concern is to increase Halal products and exports especially to members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the main Halal food market.

Themed “Synergizing Halal thru S&T”, the Halal Assembly is an excellent platform to create camaraderie, unity and solidarity among key players in the Halal sector thru science and technology.

“In this age of sustainable development, DOST is taking a quantum leap towards a robust Halal Philippines by adopting the Science and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) unified Global Halal Standard,” according to Sec. Mario Montejo.

Hosting the international event are the DOST, DOST-XII, and the Halal Development Council (HDC) MICE Middle East,

Main highlight of the event is the launch of the DOST-XII Philippine Halal Certified Logo which is duly recognized by the OIC. The logo observes the “One Standard, One Logo, One Logo, and One Test” rule for the worldwide acceptance of Halal products bearing the logo. The introduction of the said logo is expected to signal the acceptance of Philippine Halal products to the international market.

According to Dr. Laidan, DOST-XII with its Halal Science and Technology Program, including the Philippine National Halal Laboratory, will be at the country’s forefront in promoting the Philippines’ potential to become the largest Halal product supplier in the world.

The Halal laboratory will be accredited by the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TURKAK), holder of the standards and test parameters for Islamic Countries.

Expected to participate in this international event are representatives from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Philippines, England, Italy, Canada, New Zealand, Europe, USA and others.

This Assembly will benefit the more than 10 million Islamic Filipinos in the country, as well as the international community, to stay true to their religious obligations. (DOST-XII)
