Another batch of about 1 million bags of 15% and 25% broken imported rice from Vietnam is expected to arrive in the ports of Davao City and General Santos City starting next week, said NFA XI regional director Edgar Bentulan as advised by the agency’s marketing department today. These arrivals will bring the rice inventory of the region to around 1.6 million bags in the next two weeks.
“This will ensure the sustainability of NFA XI’s intervention of 19.27% to the region’s market participation of the whole rice requirement which we started to double from the other month’s volume starting last week,” Bentulan said. He said here in Davao City NFA’s intervention is now already 23.89% market share of the city’s 9,940 bags rice daily consumption requirement, an increase from 11% participation of the previous month’s.
“We are now injecting in this city at an average of about 2,380 bags daily,” the director revealed. This volume of rice sales to its total 140 retail outlets inside and outside the markets and barangays throughout the city of Davao will be sustained until September, ending the lean months period.
Assured the NFA director, prices of well-milled (WMR) commercial rice in Davao City which slide down this July to an averaged of P39.50 per kilo from P43.33 last June, are expected to drop some more to P36 to P37.50 a kilogram in the next three weeks. While regular-milled rice is foreseen to go down from the present leve of P36.50 to P33 to P34.50 a kilogram.
The whole region’s retail price average of WMR is now already P40.50, a significant drop from P42.22 last month, Dir. Bentulan further pointed out.
“As we continue to deepen and widen our penetration in the market,” NFA XI is now distributing through its 500 accredited rice retail outlets throughout the region. And the number of outlets is expected to increase in compliance with the instruction of new Administrator Arthur O. Juan in the coming days, Bentulan said.
