DepEd retrains heads, teachers of IP schools

ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, DAVAO DEL NORTE, July 24 - The Department of Education has capacitated the school heads and teachers of Indigenous People (IP) implementing schools in the Island Garden City of Samal in order for them to be equipped with indigenous knowledge, skills and practices at PHRDC, Catagman, IGaCoS.

Indigenous knowledge systems and practices acquired from Sama tribe’s forbearers are used by the school in building self-confidence and appreciation of their own identity.  During the training the participants were capacitated to design an indigenized teacher’s guide for utilization in classroom instruction.  

They gained new teaching approaches and techniques on how to develop learning tools that helped them to be effective teachers and school heads in serving the IP communities in the island.

Participants were also equipped with survival and livelihood skills that they can transfer to their students as part of the learning process of sustainable community development. Meanwhile, activities that promote life-giving relationship with the ancestral domain to sharpen their awareness on their environment, nurture for their land and nature, develop responsibility in protecting and sustaining the environment were also given.

The participants to this seminar were the 11 school heads and 11 teachers of the 11 IP schools of IGaCoS, namely: Adecor ES, Aumbay ES, Aundanao ES, Don Esteban Dasalla ES, Licup ES, Linosotan ES, Pangubatan ES, Tagbaobo ES, Tagdaliao ES, Tagpopongan ES and Tagpopongan NHS. (Teresita E.
