technical vocation scholarship program, Secretary Joel Villanueva
of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)
turned over yesterday a total of P10,143,242.00 worth of
scholarship grant to Davao del Norte local chief executives.
Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo P. del Rosario and Panabo City James G. Gamao

“Shoot for Your Dream “ basketball exhibition which matched
local TESDA basketball players with the Philippine Basketball Association
(PBA) stars.
After a brief program, the game was held
at the Panabo Multi-purpose Tourism, Cultural and Sports Center from 5:30 p.m.

The more than P10 million scholarship grant for Davao del Norte included
the P1.8 million package for the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino
Program (Pantawid Program) beneficiaries in Barangay Cagangohan of Panabo
City.
In an interview, Villanueva revealed that that the P10 million for Davao
del Norte was just a chunk of the P132 million scholarship grant for the
entire Davao Region to open up more than 14,000 scholarship slots for
school and community-based programs of TESDA.
He also promoted TESDA’s on-line program offering 29 new courses “for free”
that can be availed through logging on at www.tesda.gov.ph.
Citing Davao Region as a tourism region, Villanueva emphasized the need for
more skilled workers in hotel and restaurant management while also revealing
the market demand for construction industry-based skills such as welding and
electrical installation maintenance.
Taking particular focus on the out-of-school youths (OSYs), he urged them to
visit TESDA and take a look at the programs which he envisioned to bring about
“joyful change” in life and bright future as well.
“Ang ating gobyerno ay patuloy na gumagawa ng
mga pamamaraan para maabot-kamay ninyo ang mga programa; magkaroon ng magandang
kinabukasan at maranasan ang masayang pagbabago sa TESDA,” he said during the interview with the media.
Meanwhile, Villanueva explained that he used basketball as a means of conveying
the message of transformation in life status that people especially the youth,
can draw from availing of TESDA programs.
“Isa itong oportunidad upang maiparating sa ating mga kababayang ang mensahe
ng masayang pagbabago na mangyayari; bibisita at pupunta sila to
avail of the programs of TESDA,” he said referring to basketball while citing
it as the famous game in the countryside.
Villanueva has swung the “Shoot for Your Dream” basketball exhibition to
Pangasinan, Panabo City and then to General Santos City.
Serving as the team captain of the Team Trabaho, Villanueva brings along PBA
stars Jerry Condinera, Kenneth Duremdes, Marlou Aquino, Bal David, Zaldy
Realibut, Rodney Santos and Bobby Jose. They are matched with
local TESDA players who played under TESDA Espesyalista Team.
