DAVAO CITY, Mar 20
(PIA) House of Hope, the refuge of children afflicted with cancer continues to
live up to its name, giving hope to the patients and their families.
Speaking at the Hermes
Club Press Briefing at the Waterfront Insular Hote, Dr. Mae Dolendo, chief of
the House of Hope and oncologist at the Southern Phillippines Medical Center
said the refuge provides free housing for children with cancer from the newly
born to 19.
She said many of the
patients are coming from various areas in Mindanao particularly the indigent
ones, 81 percent among them outside Davao City.
Dolendo stressed that
cancer on children is curable if detected early.
She said cancer
patients are a priority since its impact is catastrophic because if not
treated, cancer ends in death.
Dolendo, a Datu
Bago awardee for 2015 said she just chooses to be in the Philippines after
studying abroad because she wants to help, especially the children.
She said that the
House of Hope has satellites in hospitals in the cities of General Santos, Cagayan
de Oro, Zamboanga and soon to open in Butuan.
Dolendo said the House
of Hope operation in Zamboanga City was stalled by the siege, but it will be
reactivated in the coming days.
The House of Hope in
Davao City accommodates 150 cancer patients every year half of them afflicted
with Leukemia.
Dr. Dolendo assured
that patients are given conventional treatment.
“How the cancer is
treated worldwide, it is given to the patients,” she said.
