Duterte to hire more social workers to take care of rescued children

DAVAO CITY, Mar 9 (PIA) Mayor Rodrigo Duterte mulled of hiring more social workers in the city to process rescues which might occur especially at night.
He said minors must be attended immediately once placed in the custody of the local government.

Speaking after a command conference as part of the preparation for the celebration of the 78th Araw ng Dabaw Sunday night, Duterte said the added social workers will work on a graveyard shift to attend the minors immediately especially those neglected by their parents.

“I will assign two to three social workers at night and they will take care of the children who are taken into the custody of the law for their own protection,” he said.

Earlier, Duterte ordered the police and barangay officials to round up and to rescue all minors at night especially those sleeping in public places.
He said he will look for a house that will serve as their temporary shelter.

Duterte explained that rounding up the children is not a procedure of arrest but to put them under custody for protection, after having found to be helpless and defenseless.

“It has nothing to do with the provisions of a lawful arrest,” he pointed out.

However, Duterte also ordered the police to arrest parents found to have neglected their children.

“I will teach you a lesson so that you will not be emulated by the next generation,” he said.

Last Friday night, Duterte rescued three children aged six, seven and eight sleeping under a vehicle at Barrio Obrero and brought them to a Children Refuge Center.

He also ordered to trace and to arrest the parents of these children.

Duterte said he might consider withdrawing the abandonment charges against the parents once they surrender the children to the government.
“Apparently, they are incapable of rearing and watching over the children,” he pointed out.  (PIA 11-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
