TAGUM CITY, April 22,
2015 – After eight (8) months of waiting, indigenous peoples will finally have
their representative in the halls of the Sangguniang Panlungsod with the
installment of the city’s second Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative
(IPMR).
Datu Damiano Cipro, the
barangay tribal chieftain of Barangay Canocotan, took his oath of office for a
three-year term as IP representative to the 6th City Council replacing the
late Datu Rudy Onlos whose untimely death shocked many.
Mayor Allan L. Rellon
administered Cipro’s oath last April 20, 2015 in the presence of City Vice
Mayor Geterito Gementiza, City Councilors, different Tribal Leaders and Employees
of the Local Government during the regular flag raising ceremony held in front
of the city hall.
Cipro’s installment as
the newest ex-officio member of the 6th City Council came in after months
of fine selection of the city’s indigenous peoples community which also updated
their guidelines since there’s no provision in the old one that clearly states
a replacement in case of the demise of the sitting IPMR.
On April 13, the
National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) released a certification affirming
the selection of Datu Cipro as IPMR who shall serve the three-year tem from the
period of assumption.
Datu Cipro had his first
day as IPMR attending the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod on
April 20, where he was given the chairmanship of the Committee on Public
Information. (Louie Lapat/CIO Tagum)
