Mindanao on the eve of transformation-PNOY

DAVAO CITY- Citing major developments in the Mindanao, President Benigno Aquino III described the region as in the brink of transformation.

“Now, however, as Mindanao is becoming an increasingly stable environment, we can see that the region is on the cusp of a profound transformation: from being a Land of Promise to being a Land of Promises fulfilled.” The President said in his speech in Davao City.

The President graced the second day of the Philippines Development Forum for the Bangsamoro held from November 5-6 at SMX Davao.

He cited the signing of the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement of the Bangsamoro between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Philippine Government which aims to bring peace to conflict-affected areas in the region as the main reason for the transformation, the steps to lasting peace as beyond measure.

“Now, more than ever, it is vital that we focus on getting through the next steps in the process: Getting the Bangsamoro Basic Law passed in Congress, which would establish the Bangsamoro as a political entity.” President Aquino said.

The PDF highlights the Bangsamoro Development Plan which is the blue-print for the socio economic rehabilitation and recovery of the conflict-affected areas.

The President hopes to harmonize the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program with the BDP. The SBP is a joint socio-economic program by the MILF and the GPH that aims to develop the health, education and livelihood conditions of the Bangsamoro Communities.

“Through the SBP, we are improving the living conditions of several Bangsamoro communities by offering cash for work, technical vocational training, study grants, and health insurance premiums, amongst others.... We are confident that the Bangsamoro Development Plan can be harmonized with these efforts, and build on the progress we have made at the soonest possible time.” The President said.

“From 2011 to 2014, the Department of Public Works and Highways has spent nearly P100 billion for road, bridge, and other infrastructure projects in Mindanao, and next year, the government—Congress willing—intends on investing even more.
