Filipinos in Myanmar are well regarded -- Envoy

Filipinos here have earned the respect of their employers due to their professionalism and hard work, Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex Chua said.

There are more than 860 Filipinos registered with the embassy as of June 2014.

Close to 44 percent are engaged in the engineering and manufacturing sectors while other Filipino professionals here are working as lawyers, teachers, architects, journalists and technical experts.

“Recently, we have noted an increase in the number of Filipinos registering with the embassy. In the first half of this year alone, the embassy registered 225 Filipinos,” said Chua.

He said about 70 percent of the newly registered Filipinos in Myanmar are involved in the telecommunications industry and hold managerial or supervisory positions in some multinational companies such as Coca-Cola, Ooredoo, Mitsubishi, and Ericson, among others.

“The Filipinos in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar contribute to the development of the host country Myanmar,” Chua said.

President Benigno Aquino III will be visiting Myanmar for the third time since he assumed office in 2010.

He is set to arrive on November 11 to attend the 25th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and other related summits on November 12 and 13.

Chua congratulated Myanmar for the successful hosting of ASEAN summit this year.

"This is truly a historic moment for Myanmar as its chairmanship of the ASEAN for the first time comes to a close," he said.

He said Filipinos here are hoping for the successful visit of Aquino believing that the result of the summit would benefit the country. (PCOO News Release)
