DAVAO
CITY, Feb. 04 – The Department of Trade and Industry –Consumer Protection Group
(DTI-CPG) has issued a warning on the recall notice of Gala and Granny Smith
apples following an email from its Commercial Counsellor in Washington, DC,
United States.
Based
on Commercial Counselor Roseni M. Alvero’s report, the USFDA has issued the
recall notice to Bidart Brothers, a US company which produced and exported
these apples to Hongkong.
During
the follow up action by the Center for Food Safety of Hongkong, it found that
two (2) consignments were shipped to the Philippines thru International Produce
Group and MB Fresh international.
Accordingly,
the harvest of these apples last year is associated with the “Listeriosis
Outbreak” which has a reasonable probability that the “use of or exposure to
these products will cause adverse health consequences or death.”
DTI-Davao
Region Officer-in-Charge Maria Belenda Q. Ambi has urged all concerned to
report anyone who is involved in the sale and distribution of such products to
the nearest office of DTI or Department of Health-Food Drug Administration
(DOH-FDA).
“This
is something that we must never take for granted because this concerns our
health. So we are encouraging everyone who knows of someone who is into the
sale and distribution of these brands of apples to us,” she said.
The
DTI-Davao Regional Office can be reached at (082) 224-0511 local 417/420.
