MATI CITY, DAVAO ORIENTAL- The Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Zone Authority is increasing its investments for tourism sites in Mindanao.
This according to Mark Lapid Chief Operations Officer of TIEZA who visited Mati City yesterday (January 8) for the opening of the province’s Subangan Museum.
Lapid said that Mindanao will have an allocation of P300-million for TIEZA projects which is higher compared to last year’s allocation of P270-million.
One of the TIEZA projects is located in Siargao Island known for its surfing spots. The project includes the construction of duplex cottages and bleacher seats in Pilar Siargao Island.
Also in the plans is the development of the ecotourism potentials in Mt. Hamiguitan, Lapid bared in his speech at the museum opening citing R.A. 9593.
According to the provisions of Republic Act 9593 or the Tourism Act of 2009 the law which created TIEZA, five percent (5%) of the travel tax collection share intended for TIEZA shall be earmarked for ecotourism sites in depressed provinces with strong tourism potentials.
Mt. Hamiguitan also in Davao Oriental is known for its century-old pygmy forests and home to the most diverse varieties of plant and animal life in the county is the Philippines’ nominee for inclusion to the list of World’s Heritage Sites.
Lapid said they are awaiting proposals for Mt. Hamiguitan as now they are enabled to fund these projects based on the mandate of the tourism law.
“TIEZA has been promoting Mindanao, last year we helped in promoting MICE (Meetings Incentives Conventions Exhibitions) in Davao. “ Lapid said.
Also part of its assistance in tourism in the region is a substantial amount of P10-million given to the province of Davao Oriental for the realization of its Subangan museum.
“Having a museum is not just something that we visit, we see museum as a landmark as a means to inspire the people.” Lapid said during his speech.
The successor of the erstwhile Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), TIEZA under the tourism law is a corporate body which shall designate, regulate and supervise the Tourism Enterprise Zones established under RA 9593, as well as develop, manage and supervise tourism infrastructure projects in the country.
