DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur, Jan. 21 – Three members of the New People’s Army surrendered their firearms and ammunition to Davao del Sur Governor Claude P. Bautista in time for the latter’s birthday celebration on Friday (Jan. 17, 2014).
Bautista warmly welcomed the surrenderees whose faces were masked and whose names were withheld, as he conveyed a message of reconciliation and unity.
“Returning to the folds of the law has given them a new hope to move on and enjoy life in peace and comfort,” the governor stated during his 54th birthday celebration with the other local government officials and employees held at the provincial capitol gym.
The former NPA members first surrendered to Lt. Col. Norman Zuniega, commanding officer of the 39th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.
As earlier interviewed by the Philippine Army spokesperson, the three surrenderees confessed that they allegedly had difficulties in their respective tasks when they were still actively involved in the communist underground movement, aside from the discomfort of being away from their families.
