DAVAO DEL NORTE, May 9 (PIA) - - - To launch the city’s investment and incentive code, the City Government of Tagum conducted its 1st Investment Forum yesterday at Molave Hotel.
JasminAngco, investment promotion officer of the city, said that since the code has been approved by the city council on May 5, the investment stakeholders need to be capacitated in terms of knowledge management to jumpstart the implementation of the ordinance.
Angco added that the stakeholders should learn from the experience and expertise from our speakers to bring in more investors in the city, thereby generating more employment.
The forum featured speakers from the consular office of Malaysia, Board of Investments (BOI), Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC), Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The driver on investment promotion
Gil Dureza, head of BOI XI, said that the drivers on investment promotion must be the local leaders. Dureza said that it is the leaders who set the tone for the development of the investment climate in the area.
Ivan Cortez, head of DCIPC, confirmed that the leaders, not the investment promotion unit, should be the main facilitator in investment promotion.
Cortez added that the investment promotion unit are just associates of the local leaders.
Dureza revealed that the efforts of the leaders in Sta. Cruz boosted the investment of the province of Davao del Sur.
For the years 2010-2013, the Davao del Sur generated an investment of P 67-billion; while Davao del Norte gained P 3.1-billion of investment.
Investment Trigger for Tagum
Dureza said that one of the ingredients in a successful investment promotion is a trigger and for Tagum, it can be the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI).
Dureza added that with the ICTSI being located in Tagum and with its future projects in Australia and Middle East, the city can position as an international transhipment hub.
Edwin Banquerigo, DTI provincial director of Davao del Norte, said that validated that the strategic location of Tagum made it ideal for logistics and support industry, in which a transhipment hub is one of the components.
Banquerigo said that their office spread the investments within Davao del Norte and not focused only in Tagum.
Banquerigo said that investments in the province are placed to the city or municipality based on the potential of the area to handle the business in terms of resources. (PIA 11, Michael Uy)
