More hydro-power projects in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY- About 76 megawatts of hydro-power plants are slated to be built by Hedcor starting this year.

This include the 68 megawatt hydro-power plant in Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon which will have its ground breaking I the middle of this year.

The 8-megawatt hydro-power plant in Tamugan is still in a feasibility study. The project was delayed because of opposition from the Davao City Water District over the use of Tamugan River.

With other power-generation plants being constructed in Mindanao, these hydro power facilities are seen as a solution to the Mindanao power crisis.

Rene Ronquillo, president and chief operations officer of Hedcor, an Aboitiz subsidiary said that hydro-power plants in the region accounts for half of the generated power of Hedcor which also maintains plants in Benguet and Ilocos Sur.

Ronquillo said their plants in Tudaya, Talomo and Sibulan generated 320-million kilowatt hours per year.

Hedcor inaugurated yesterday (May 13) the 14-megawatt Tudaya Hydro-power plant, with Department of Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla gracing the occasion.

The Tudaya Plant is a run-of-river design hydro-power facility consisting of two plants, Tudaya 1 generating 6.6 megawatts is contracted by Davao Light and Power Company while Tudaya 2 with its 7 mega-watt is contracted by Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative (Dasureco).

Tudaya plants has reduced the power deficiency of DLPC whose franchise area is bedeviled by brownouts, while it has given Dasureco adequate power supply shielding it from experiencing brownouts.

Since it operated last March, the hydropower plant has generated about seven-million kilowatt hours at the peak of summer season.

These hydro-power plants aside from providing more power to the Mindanao grid will also provide revenues, livelihood and corporate social responsibility programs to its host communities.  (PIA/RG Alama)
