CITY OF TAGUM, Davao del Norte, March 13 (PIA)--- The first grand home-coming event of Tagumenyos drew 38 balikbayans from the United States of America, Europe, the Middle East and countries in Asia.
City of Tagum Mayor Allan Rellon viewed the balikbayan participation to the first home-coming event dubbed as Tagumenyo Bisag Asa (Tagumenyos Everywhere), as a manifestation of pride of the Tagumenyo origin.
The balikbayan home-coming was made part of the trio- events that ran from Feb. 22 to March 7, putting together three major events in the city particularly the Musikahan Festival, the 16th founding anniversary of the city of Tagum and the Tagumenyo Bisag Asa.
Those who took part of the event came home either as emigrants or workers from Dubai, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Italy, Germany, England Japan, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, HongKong. There were also those who came from states in the US such that in Florida, New York, California, Los Angeles and Miami
Rellon imbibed in them the spirit of being successful by letting them memorize the phrase “Tagum, Tagumpay! (Tagum, Success!), Tagumpay, Tagum! (Success, Tagum!) “which, to him, could condition the minds of every Tagum resident “to aim high in every endeavor.”
He went on to explain his development agenda coined in an acronym “EAGLE WINGS” which stands for “education, employment, agriculture, peace and security, livelihood and tourism, economy and affordability of taxes, wellness, NGO (non-government organization) empowerment, good governance and social services”.
On the other hand, Tagumenyo Bisag Asa executive committee chairperson Norma Pereyras made the home-coming participants aware of the public-private partnership that the city government observed in launching the event aimed at giving “honor” for Tagumenyos who worked and stayed abroad but supported their families in their home-town.
“We thank the city government for having a grateful heart. Saan man kayo naroroon (Wherever you may be), we are proud of you,” she said.
She told them of the transformation of the city of Tagum from a mere barangay to a “place of commerce, a place of God-given talents, place of relaxation, and place to live and love,” she said. “One thing that holds us together is our love for one another and our love for Tagum,” she added.
Having gone to places in the Philippines andz abroad as a civic and non-government volunteer, Pereyras expressed hope for the balikbayans to spread the good things they saw in the city of Tagum.
Aside from the warm words of welcome, the homecoming participants were treated with dances performed by members of Tagum City National High School Dance Theater Guild. Winners of Kantahan sa Tagum also rendered songs during the honoring night for Tagumenyo Balikbayans, held at the Clubhouse poolside in the Davao del Norte Tourism and Sports Complex.
