DAVAO CITY- The City Council of Davao City has approved on second reading the proposal of Therma South Incorporated (TSI) to expand the capacity of its baseload power plant from 300 Megawatt to 645 Megawatts.
“This expansion will ensure Mindanao will have enough power when demand catches up with supply again in 2017 and 2018," Therma South President and Chief Operating Officer Benjamin A. Cariaso Jr. said.
The expansion project is expected to be completed by 2017 and 2018. AboitizPower is anticipating that the demand for power in the Mindanao Grid will exceed the supply of power. TSI is a subsidiary of AboitizPower.
Like the original capacity power plant, the expansion plant will be using a circulating fluidized-bed technology to ensure the power plant will meet national and international standards on health and environment.
During the December 18 (Tuesday) session 22 City Councilors voted yes to the project while two voted against.
The City Council were also informed about TSI’s carbon sink management program which the company launched in partnership with Matigsalog indigenous peoples in barangay Marilog of the city. The 1,000-hectare area will also reforest the ancestral lands which is also serves as Davao City's watershed.
Meanwhile City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte defended the expansion project of the power plant saying that the coal plant is the cheaper and more accessible source of power which will benefit the city. (PIA/RG Alama)
