Tagum revives ‘Flores de Mayo’ tradition

CITY OF TAGUM, DAVAO DEL NORTE (May 7) PIA —This city of festivals formally opened on Sunday, May 5, 2013 its month-long version of the tradition that honors the Virgin Mary dubbed as Flores de Tagumeño.

The giant statue of Sacred Heart of Jesus at the back of Mindanao’s biggest basilica provided a good backdrop to the Holy Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Shielo A. Cabias, which formally kicked-off the month-long festivities.

Jointly organized by the City Government of Tagum and the City of Tagum Tourism Council, the 5th year of Flores de Tagumeño seeks to revive the Roman Catholic tradition of fiestas introduced during the Spanish era.

For the whole month of May, children in the different Gagmayng Kristohanong Katilingban or GKK (Basic Ecclesial Communities) across the city will devote their time for Flores de Maria, where they will be taught about the Catechetical teachings of the Church, offer flowers and sing songs of praise to Mother Mary and recite the Holy Rosary.

A chamber choir concert-competition with a solo performance aptly dubbed as “Harana Kay Birhen Maria” shall also unfold on May 24 at the Rotary Park-Open Space. Participants of the said competition will be participated by the different GKKs in the city.

Highlighting the month-long festivity on May 25 is the Santacruzan de Tagumeño, which is a procession of 26 Sagalas along the city’s major thoroughfares. The gowns that will be used by the sagalas are designed by 19 fashion designers based in Tagum City and Davao City. (Louie Lapat of CIO Tagum)
