Elections in Davao City and Davao Region relatively peaceful despite gun, liquor ban violations


DAVAO CITY, May 13 (PIA) --- Senior Superintendent Ronald de la Rosa, director of the Davao City Police Office assessed a relatively peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections as of 9:30 am Monday.

He said unlike the previous elections, voters can easily find their names on the official lists of voters posted outside the polling precincts.

De la Rosa said a total of 1,460 policemen are deployed in the the various areas of the city to do election-related duties with two cops manning a polling center.

He also urged the residents to cooperate in the liquor ban policy which remains in effect up to 12:00 am May 14.

De la Rosa said a total of 120 violators, nine of them minors are facing election charge for the liquor ban violation.

As of midday Monday, the polls in Davao region remained relatively peaceful and orderly. 

Senior Inspector Gretchen Cinco, deputy spokesperson of the Police Regional Office XI said based on the monitoring conducted by the Regional Election Monitoring Action Center, no untoward election related incident happened so far since the polls started.

She said that a total of 30 persons were arrested by the police since 6:00 am May 12 to 8:00 am May 13 for violations like illegal possession of deadly weapons and firearms.

Cinco said two cases of illegal possession of deadly weapon were booked by the Davao City Police Office while eight cases and 20 cases of illegal possession of firearms were booked by the police in Compostela Valley and Davao del Sur, respectively.

 She also disclosed that a total of 121 persons were arrested for liquor ban violation of which 120 were caught in Davao City while one was apprehended in Davao del Sur.

 Cinco said no liquor violation was reported in the provinces of Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental.
 Mayor Rodrigo Duterte cast his votes 4:30 pm Monday hoping for a fresh mandate from the city residents.

He told reporters that he prefers to stay home and to keep updated of the results of the polls and other election related developments until the counting is over.

 Duterte said the election year has been for his party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod where many of the candidates run unopposed.

 He predicted only a tight fight at the city’s first district where his candidate representative Luis Bonguyan is running against incumbent Representative Karlo Nograles.

 Duterte urged winning and losing candidates to forget the campaign period and work for the good of the city.
 “I do not want politics to destroy our efforts.  Now that the election is almost through, we must work for the welfare of the city residents,” he said.

 Duterte underscored that his governance is for the poor residents who need the services of a mayor.
He said he will exert more effort to improve the economy.

 Duterte said he will concentrate on the social services and improve on the services for the poor through land reform program through forceful expropriation.

 “It is working now with the domestic growth of the city from three to five percent.  I will devote the remaining years of my leadership for the poor. They are the ones who need a mayor,” he said. (PIA XI/Joey Dalumpines)
