Cramped detention centers a deterrent to crime-DCPO

DAVAO CITY May 20 (PIA)- Severely overcrowded detention centers in Davao City's police stations can be a deterrent to crimes.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) chief Police Senior Superintendent said that the presently overcrowded detention facilities can be used to dissuade people from committing a crime.

Dela Rosa said that detention cells are presently 500% overcrowded, a typical detention cell can only accommodate 20 people.

The DCPO chief pointed out that Sta. Ana Police Station currently has 20 detainees and if United States police standards is used the size of the cell can be for a single person only. Dela Rosa bewailed the inhuman conditions of the jails as most of the detainees are now just standing because they have no more room to sit.

"I have no remedy in mind, except it can be used to dissuade people from committing a crime." dela Rosa said adding that the media can help by disseminating the news about the state of the city’s jails and detention facilities.

He said people will think twice about committing a crime if they see that once they are caught they will be sent to an overcrowded jail.

The DCPO chief revealed that he has discussed with Mayor-elect Rodrigo Duterte of his proposal to expand at least twice-fold the size of detention cells, he estimates it to have a budget of P1-million.

"Maghimo pa ko sa proposal." (I still have to make the proposal) said the police chief saying that he has to formalize the proposal which he will submit to the city government. (PIA/RG Alama)
