DOST Programs and Projects Showcased during the Inalima Festival

MATI CITY- As Davao Oriental celebrates its Inalima Festival, the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) of the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. XI (DOST XI) presented some of the programs and projects of the Department in a Science and Technology (S&T) Forum last June 27, 2012 at Honey’s Hotel and Restaurant, Mati, Davao Oriental.

The S&T Forum was mostly attended by students and teachers from Davao Oriental.  Topics included in the forum were DOST Scholarships, DOST STARBOOKS, and the Ovicidal/Larvicidal Trap (OL-Trap) Technology.

Scholarships for secondary until post graduate studies were presented during the forum.  Application forms were also distributed to the participants for them to avail of the scholarships offered by the DOST.  Since most of the participants were from the academe, they were presented the S&T Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Station or STARBOOKS.  STARBOOKS is a new academic resource for students and researchers.  Davao Oriental schools were encouraged to avail of the STARBOOKS.

Another new technology developed by DOST was introduced to the group to make them aware of a new strategy to reduce the development of Aedes mosquito.  The mosquito OL-Trap, a system used to control the population of the dengue virus-carrying Aedes mosquitoes, was presented to the group.  Some OL-Trap kits were also distributed to the participants during the forum.  The participants were told that with the proper use of OL-Traps and monitoring, the population of Aedes mosquitoes can be controlled, and hopefully reduce the number of dengue cases in the region.

Aside from the S&T forum, other activities were conducted during the said festival.  Micro, small and medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were invited to exhibit their products at the Inalima Trade Fair and Exhibit.  The DOST also joined the trade fair and exhibit showcasing the products of beneficiaries under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) of the Department.
