Davao City sets week for persons with disabilities


DAVAO CITY July 16 (PIA)-The City Government of Davao has declared July 17 to July 23 as the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) week.

This is in consonance with the national observance of the 34th NDPR week set on the same date. City Mayor Sara Duterte signed Proclamation No. 09 last July 11, 2012 which declares the observance of NDPR week in Davao city.

The NDPR week is held on the week prior to the birth date of Filipino hero, Apolinario Mabini, the sublime paralytic.

Overcoming his physical disability, Mabini’s heroic acts during the Philippine Revolution and as one of the leaders of the first Philippine Republic greatly influenced the declaration and observance of the disability prevention and rehabilitation in the country.

The proclamation also recognizes the aspirations of Presidential Proclamation 240 which declares 2003-2012 as the Philippine Decade of Persons with Disabilities.

The decade is aimed at highlighting the goals of the state in promoting the plight of Filipinos with disabilities as well as their rehabilitation, self-development , self-reliance and integration in the society.

City proclamation adopts, the NDPR’s Week theme, “Mainstreaming Persons with Disabilities in Economic Development.” Where the city government realizes the importance of persons with disabilities, letting them enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, actively contributing in nation-building.

The City proclamation was read during the flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall attended by representatives from both the local government and the national government agencies.

Among the events to be held during the NDPR week included Pag-Asa games on July 17, career and employment advocacy, entrepreneurship forum on PWDs on the 18th. Also on scheduled are regional livelihood and employment summit on July 19 and a jobs fair on July 20. (PIA 11/RG Alama)
