Davao City celebrates 79th cityhood anniversary



DAVAO CITY- Davao City will celebrate today (March 16) its founding anniversary as a city.

Parada Dabawenyo, a civic-military parade which snakes its way along the city's main thoroughfare is the highlight of today's festivities. It will be attended by about 249 contingents coming from the local government offices, national government agencies, police, military, schools and private groups. The contingent's number is bigger than last year's number pegged at 184.

Aside from people, the parade will also feature dogs and horses who will be taking part in the parade. The Davao Dog Lover's Community and the Davao Horse Club is joining the parade.

Last night (March 15) this year's Mutya ng Dabaw was crowned along with her court. Allyza Molly Teodor was declared as this year's Mutya ng Dabaw, Dane Rae Sillo was named as Diwa ng Dabaw (1st runner-up), Maria Karis Garbriala del Coro is this year's Sinag ng Dabaw (2nd runner-up), Elda Louise Aznar is the Pag-Asa ng Dabaw and Angelica Almaden is the Patnubay ng Dabaw. The pageant was held at the Davao City Recreation Center.

In time with the celebration, the city will be enjoying a 2-day holiday. March 16 is an annual holiday by virtue of Republic Act 7551. While March 17 was declared by President Benigno Aquino III thru Proclamation 1234 series of 2016 as a holiday in Davao City. The March 17 holiday is meant for the Dabawenyos to celebrate Araw ng Pasalamat (Thanksgiving Day).

The City's cityhood was inaugurated in March 1, 1936 by then Interior Secretary Elpidio Quirino, Commonwealth Act 51 the law which created the city was signed on October 16, 1936 by President Manuel Quezon. (PIA/RG Alama)
