Davao Sur town readies for Kialegnon Festival

MAGSAYSAY, Davao del Sur, Aug. 7 – Preparations are underway for the next month’s 8th Kialegnon Festival, a weeklong celebration of the town’s cultural richness and abundance of harvest.

In a meeting Wednesday afternoon, festival organizers and coordinators agreed to hold the festival from September 23 to 28, 2015 where the opening program dubbed as Panagtagbo (Convergence) will take place for the first time at a far-flung B’laan village in Upper Asbang-Elok, Barangay Tagaytay, this town.

The area is promoted to be the next tourist destination in the southern part of Davao del Sur since almost 100 percent of residents are B’laans, who welcome visitors in their tribal dances in tune with the symphony of “faglong, agong and kulintang” instruments.

It is also home of seven cascading falls, cave and a lake, all of which can be reached through a two-hour uphill and downhill trek.

On the second day which is designated as Farmers’ Day, farmers will be showcasing MagRice (Magsaysay Rice), the organically-produced rice, which is now making a name not just locally but nationally since it was already recognized and awarded as the top One Town One Product (OTOP) in the Davao region and second in the entire Mindanao.

Other products like fruits, vegetables and high-valued crops will be on display at the Organic Trading Post (OTP) for the consumption of the buying public.

Inter-barangay competition of traditional games like “karang” race, royal dama, chariot race, among others will also take center stage on the third day during the whole day activities while on the night time it will be the finals of the 3rd Tingog sa Kialeg, which is the town’s version of The Voice Philippines Kids Edition.

The “Hiyas sa Kialeg”, the search for most talented, brainy and beautiful woman from the B’laan and Bagobo tribes, the town’s dominant tribal groups, will be the highlight on the night of Day 6.

On the culmination day, the “Kialegnong Parada” a contest of best-dressed group of teachers and carabao floats will be marching on the major thoroughfares of Poblacion area that would surely be a crowd-drawer.
