The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) will lead this year’s celebration of the national maritime
Week from September 22 to 26, 2014. This was announced by the newly appointed MARINA XI regional director, Felisa Orongan.
Director Orongan averred that the celebration is in line with the
theme, “IMO Conventions: Effective implementation” in Davao City,
various activities are being lined up which will be participated in by
different maritime schools, maritime enterprises, concerned government
agencies, seafarers and their families.
The celebration kicks off with a foot parade on September 22, 2014 at
6:30 in the morning, starting from Magsaysay Park and to end at the
People’s Park where an opening program will be held to be highlighted
with a Silent Drill Exhibition by the maritime schools in Davao City. On
the same day, a “Paint a School Wall” competition will at start at 2:00
P.M and to be judged on the following day, September 23, 2014,
afterwhich a focused-group discussion on R.A. 10635 and other maritime
related issues will be tackled at the Function Hall of the Commission on
Higher Education (CHED) with no less than the Executive Director of the
STCW Office of MARINA-Manila, Dr. Atty. Capt. Alvin A. Tormon, to lead
the discussion.
Then, on September 24, 2014 at exactly 9:00 o’clock in the morning,
there will be a blood letting at the AMOSUP Seamen’s Hospital and at the
same time on that day, Basic Safety Olympics will be held at the DMMA
College of Southern Philippines to be participated in by selected
students coming from the different maritime schools in the city.
On the top of the above-mentioned events, there will be also be a
Maritime Quiz Show to be participated in also by maritime students on
September 25, 2014. Moreover, in the morning of September 26, 2014, a
symposium on “The Growth of the Philippines in Complying with the IMO
Conventions, Improvements and Challenges” will be conducted at the AVR
of the Holy Cross of Davao College, This will be presented by Dir.
Arsenio F. Lingad, Director of the Overseas Shipping Services,
MARINA-Manila. In the afternoon of the same day, a thanksgiving mass
will be offered to be followed by a closing ceremony.
