Gov lauds DavOr’s victor athletes, inspires young players

DAVAO ORIENTAL, September 28, 2015 –Young athletes from the province who remarkably represented Davao Oriental in the national sports competitions were given well-deserved honor and salutations during the recently held Provincial Meet 2015 at the Municipality of San Isidro.

Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon hailed the young athletes for their stellar performance, describing them as inspiration for the entire province as they exemplified the true meaning of hard work, perseverance and determination.

She cited Christian Paul Anor, a secondary student from the coastal village of Lambajon in Baganga town, who clinched as a gold medalist in the swimming event during the prestigious Palarong Pambansa 2015 held in Tagum City, Davao del Norte last May 2015.He again championed in the Philippine National Gamesrecently held in Pagadian City.

With the absence of modern facilities for his training aside from the unforgiving waves of the Pacific Ocean that served as his training ground, Anor managed to build much-needed strength and stamina that gave him edge over his opponents in the swimming competitions.

“Truly there is no excuse for not excelling,” said Governor Malanyaon, noting Anor’ssuccess despite the lack of facilities to hone his trade.

Aside from Anor, a couple of elementary students, namely, Alexis Joy Geollegue and Hanna Amazona from Banaybanay town also received praises after emerging as silver medalists for the tennis event in the 2015 PalarongPambansa.

Also just recently, the skim boarding prodigy of Davao Oriental, Sonny Boy ‘Bayogyog’Aporbo bagged first prize during the 9th International Skim boarding Competition 2015 held recently in Penang, Malaysia.

“They have brought honor to our province. As the governor I am so proud, ”said the governor, adding that these athlete’s accomplishments are a stark reminder of the values of discipline and dedication.“ Their achievements reminds us that if we are too determined to reach our dreams then no obstacle can ever becomea hindrance from us achieving them,”she added.

Meanwhile, Governor Malanyaon congratulated the town of San Isidro, led by Mayor Justina Yu, in partnership with the Department of Education Provincial Division, supervised by Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Feliciano Tamondong, Jr. for hosting this sports event for the young athletes of Davao Oriental. “This is a noble and fulfilling task to achieve, and yet it requires more than the usual competencies to meet the demands and challenges of big sporting events like this one,” she said. “As the Governor of the Province, I am happy to see that San Isidro is taking the challenge of hosting with confidence and enthusiasm this year’s Provincial Meet,” she added.

THE EFFECTS OF SPORTS

During her speech, Governor Malanyaon recognized the significance of sports in unifying the people. “It unifies races, social status, and differences.”

Likewise, she also underscored sports humbling effects which is a reality in any competitive game.“There will be always be winners and losers. I believe one of the significant values of sports is how we teach the young to handle defeats more than in victories. The most important thing is that for any fair play, defeat is temporary and you can always bounce back for the next match,” she said. “Another point is that events like this allows our children to be inconvenienced and to be away from the comforts of home. Think about the less comfortable transportation, food and accommodation. Some parents understand that one way or another, their children has to learn that not everything in life is comfortable, that not everything is about winning. The humbling effect of sports teaches us how to be resilient.”

She related the realities of sports to the experiences of the Province of Davao Oriental in its development journeythatmade it even stronger and resilient. She said her administration’s undertakings in pushing for many development programs and projects are not without difficulty, particularly in the inscription of the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. She stressed that the successful inscription promises a lot of benefits, in terms of socio-economic development, not only for the town of San Isidro and its neighboring towns but for the whole province as well.
