Tagum’s Palm City photo contest’s winners declared

City of Tagum’s First Palm City Photography Contest which was conceptualized by the City Government of Tagum and organized by the Office of the Tagum City Information ended its 5-day exhibition with a simple awarding ceremony recognizing the victors of the said contest last August 5, 2012 at the Gaisano Grand Mall Atrium, Apokon Road, Tagum City.

Almost 47,000 thousand pesos of cash prizes were awarded during the awarding rites, which was graced by City Councilors De Carlo “Oyo” L. Uy and Councilor Ma. Lina Baura, City Administrator Rafael Abrenica, City Human Resource Management Officer Edna J. Quilario, Hexat Mining Corporation Vice-President Ferdinand M. Galang and Store Operations Manager of Gaisano Grand Mall, Tagum Mr. Alvin R. Manco.

The younger Uy took the floor to thank the photographers who participated the 1st ever palm photography contest in showcasing the beauty of Tagum’s icon as the Palm City of the Philippines as well as giving appreciation to the sponsoring companies.

Mr. Norman Jadulang from Davao City won the 1st place winner with photo entry title “Livistonia” with a cash prize of 10 thousand pesos.  The 2nd place winner - Jayson Kirk Arnaiz from Tagum City with photo entry title “Pamaypay” who won 8 thousand pesos, 3rd place winner - Andrew Bastes from Mati City with photo entry title “Lights and Line” who received 7 thousand pesos, 4th place winner - Kent Duque from Tagum City with photo title “Palm After the Rain” who received 5 thousand pesos and the 5th place winner - Marlito Ayala from Davao City with photo title “Future Palm Trees” who received 3 thousand pesos.

The recipients for the consolations prizes who won 1,500 pesos each are Asthrophil Reyes (Tagum City), Emerson Delos Reyes (Tagum City), Arjoy Ceniza (Mati City) and Ramil Gregorio (Lupon, Davao Oriental) who won twice in the said category.

Mayor Rey T. Uy is supposed to choose 1 photo for the Mayor’s Choice Award but instead he picked it up 7 Best Photos.
These are won by Dr. Harvey Leonardia (Tagum City), Asthrophil Reyes (Tagum City), Ramil Gregorio (Lupon, Davao Oriental), Elmer Macarona (Mati City), Arjoy Ceniza (Mati City), Hernan Bardelovar Jr. (Tagum City), and Jonard Patenio (Tagum City) whom each of them received 1,000 thousand pesos each in cash.

And for the Special Award Category, John Paul Castillo (Tagum City) won the Canon’s Choice Award, Jesus Tinapay (Davao City) and Allan Rosh Catotal (Tagum City) won the Tagum City Information’s Office Award, Gian Carlo Melendres (Tagum City) got the Traveller Teller’s Choice and Bienvenido Quirante (Tagum City) won the Hexat Mining Corp. Choice with 1,000 thousand pesos cash given by personally by the Vice President of Hexat Mining, Ferdinand M. Galang.

About 169 photographs of different palm trees from 38 participating photographers (professionals, rookies and amateurs) based in Tagum City and from other parts of Davao Region.

It’s been almost seven years since the City Government of Tagum through the leadership of Mayor Uy jumpstarted the massive planting of palm trees and as of this writing, the City Agriculture Office disclosed that there are already 22 kinds of palms that are existing in Tagum. It is one of Tagum’s plans for sustainable development, advancing for improvement and not compromising the nature.

The Department of Tourism acknowledged City Ordinance No. 280, s. 2006 which earned the city as the official Palm City of the country.

Meanwhile, taking part in the contest as members of the panel of judges are Columnist and Professional Photographer Jojie Alcantara, GMA Davao Correspondents John Paul Seniel and Real Sorroche, Award-winning Travel Blogger and Photographer Mr. Rolan Emboscado, Miss Star Algones of Canon Marketing Philippines and a Lifestyle Photographer Mr. Ferdinand Galang, the Vice-President of Hexat Mining Corporation. Louie Jay Losaria and Edwin Lasquite of CIO Tagum
