DAVAO CITY, Nov. 22 (PIA) — Agencies of the government together with non-government organizations focusing on children joined the observance of Children’s Day on Nov. 22 participated in by more than 500 children from various organizations and schools.
The gathering ran in line with the 24th Universal Children’s Day commemorating the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which was ratified by more than 190 countries including the Philippines.
The Mindanao Coalition for Children’s Rights spearheaded the celebration the 24th Universal Children’s Day held at the Almendras Gym, Davao City that was also declared as Davao City Children’s Day through Executive Order No. 07 Series of 2009.
Backed up by the Regional Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC), the celebration drummed up the national advocacy campaign theme, “Child-Friendly Philippines: A Caring and Protective Society for, by and with the Children” which was in line with the vision of the Council for the Welfare of the Children.
Other support groups were the Task Force Davao, Amnesty International, 5th CRG, Civil Relations Services of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (CRSAFP), the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO).
In her talk during the event, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Priscilla Razon pointed out the importance of observing Children’s Day which marked the universal call to take care of the welfare of children and to advance their rights.
“We need to make them feel important and that they should always feel the guidance and the care of the community,” she said in the presence of children.
While advocating the development of children, Razon gave credit to parents who had been found doing their best to provide the various needs of their children especially in terms of education, health and protection.
Meanwhile, Razon lauded the Mindanao Coalition for Children’s Rights for leading agencies of the local and the national government and the NGOs in observing the UNCRC Day known as the Universal Children’s Day.
Aside from holding a program, the Mindanao Coalition for Children’s Rights also held a Walk for The Children, recognition of Child-friendly advocates, launching of the We Care! Child-friendly Movement and a musical show of the children featuring their talents. (PIA-11/ Jeanevive Duron Abangan)
