Panabo commemorates HIV/AIDS day

PANABO CITY, Davao del Norte, June 4 (PIA) - To commemorate the victims of HIV/AIDS, the City Government of Panabo  held a candle lighting ceremony at the Panabo Out-Patient Emergency Clinic and Safe Birthing Facility or popularly known as Emergency Clinic on June 2, 2014.

The activity was conducted by City Health Office lead by Dr. Emelda T. Bendijo aimed to raise social awareness on Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Dr. Bendijo said that everybody can wear a red ribbon which means Care, Hope and Support. It is also a symbol of solidarity and a commitment to fight HIV/AIDS. “Wearing a red ribbon is just our first step in the fight against HIV and AIDS,” Bendijo added.

Furthermore, sthose people who wear the Red Ribbon don’t have to be HIV positive or living with AIDS. This signifies support for those living with HIV, continuing education and understanding of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

Panabo City Mayor Jose L. Silvosa, Sr. duly represented by Executive Secretary Jovito M. Glodo delivers the message of the mayor encouraging the people to be involved in the endeavor remembering those who died of HIV/AIDS.

“These lighted candles that we are lighting are a symbol of hope. It signals that we should keep our courage and determination burning. It gives us the reason to continue living this life lent to us. Let us share this light to the world and make a difference,” message of Mayor Silvosa.

Everybody is encouraged to light a candle and offers prayers in front of the emergency clinic and at home to show our serious efforts to fight against the dreaded illness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 36 Million people have died of HIV since the beginning of the epidemic. At the end of 2012, an estimate of 35.3 Million people was living with HIV. In the Philippines, according to the Department of Health, 10, 514 people are living with HIV/AIDS as of January 2013 which clearly shows an alarming increase compared to the previous years’ data.

According to the City Health of Panabo, there are 17 cases of HIV/AIDS reported in our city. While this number is not as high as the other localities, the City Government is serious in mitigating the spread of HIV/AIDS by expanding the Information Education Campaign to the 40 barangays regarding the cause and effect of HIV/AIDS.(Mark Anthony G. Sta. Cruz LGU out to implement P2.4M livelihood projects
STA. CRUZ, Davao del Sur, June 04 (PIA) – A total of P2.4 million is allocated by the local government of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur as counterpart to several projects under the Local Poverty Reduction Action Program (LPRAP).

The projects are expected to be implemented within this year as an offshoot to the Grassroots Participatory Budgeting Process (GPBP).

GPBP, formerly called Bottom-up Budgeting, is an approach to preparing the budget proposal of agencies, taking into consideration the development needs of cities/municipalities as identified in their respective local poverty reduction action plans that shall be formulated with strong participation of basic sector organizations and other civil society organizations.

It is an initiative of the national government in pursuit of attaining the Philippine Development Plan’s goal of inclusive growth and poverty reduction, and promoting good governance at the local level.

Some 29 identified projects which are equally distributed to all sectors of the municipality have already been set for implementation, mostly livelihood projects and social infrastructure as identified by the community in the grassroots level. (CDIO-Sta. Cruz/Julius R. Paner)
