DAVAO CITY- The World Heritage Committee has officially inscribed Davao Oriental’s Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in the list of World’s Heritage Sites.
The inscription was held last June 23 in Doha Qatar during the body’s 38th session.
“This inscription is a celebration of the global partnership in our shared vision and desire to conserve these natural gifts for future generations. It is also a step forward towards the continuation of monitoring and preserving the fragile ecosystems in the mountain amidst changing climate and typhoon patterns,” declared Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon who also attended the inscription.
With and 6,834 hectares the Mt. Hamiguitan Range and Wildlife sanctuary has one of the most diverse wildlife populations in the country. It is known for its sprawling bonsai forest and is also the home of the endangered Philippine Eagle. It was declared a protected area in 2004 under Republic Act 9303.
The International Union of the Conservation of Nature has praised the nomination of Mt. Hamiguitan as exemplary.
The mountain which straddles Mati City and towns of Governor Generoso and San Isidro is the first World Heritage Site in Mindanao and sixth in the country after the Spanish colonial town of Vigan, Banaue Rice Terraces, Tubbataha Reef, Puerto Princesa Undergound River and the churches of San Agustin in Manila, Miag-ao in Iloilo and Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte.
World Heritage Sites are those inscribed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for its special cultural and natural significance. (PIA/RG Alama)
