DavNor orients agri-biz industry on organic certification

DAVAO DEL NORTE, June 4 (PIA) - - - The provincial government here encouraged the entrepreneurs of the agri-business industry to submit their farms and products to organic certification.

The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) assembled 79 owners and representatives from the agri-business sector of the province on June 2 at the GSP Hall, Tagum City for the orientation on Organic Certification.

Anastacia Notarte, provincial agriculturist, said that the businesses should apply for certification to be able to compete with the players on the same industry, especially that ASEAN Integration is in the offing.

Edwin Banquerigo, provincial director of DTI, said the need to be certified is a must especially to companies, who want to expand their market abroad.

“Most of the foreign companies look for certifications before they deal with suppliers,” Banquerigo said.

The orientation was conducted by the Control Union International, a globally acknowledged independent inspection team for different type of certification.

The orientation focuses on agriculture certification for Europe, Japan and America.

As part of the orientation, 29 participants went to Panabo City on June 3 to tour potential places for organic certification. (PIA 11, Michael Uy)
