DAVAO CITY, Dec. 07 (PIA) – The Municipality of Sta. Cruz has been cited as 2014 Regional Winner of the Rafael M. Salas Population and Development award for municipality category.
Sta. Cruz bested other municipal governments because of its exemplary implementation of population and development programs, projects and activities contributing to the goals of the Population Management Program for healthy, happy and empowered Filipino families.
The Awards criteria are Governance on Health and Health Financing; Access to Programs, Services and Facilities; and Performance Monitoring.
Population Officer Vicky Tac-an received the award on behalf of Sta. Cruz Mayor Atty. Joel Ray L. Lopez on November 26, 2015 at Century Park Hotel, Manila.
The award is designed to perpetuate the legacy of Rafael M. Salas by honoring local government units, local chief executives and institutions or individuals for their outstanding contributions in the field of population and development.
It also aims to heighten support and participation among government, non-government officials, individuals, or institutions in the implementation of the population management program.
Rafael M. Salas is the First Executive Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from the time it became operational in 1969 until 1987.
He was a pioneer in the field of population who advocated the importance of understanding the links between population and development and the need to take population factors into account in development planning. (CDIO-Sta. Cruz/Julius R. Paner)
