Army condemns grenade attack in brgy fiesta


DAVAO CITY Sept. 3- The Philippine Army has condemned the grenade throwing incident which occurred in the evening of September 1  in a crowded covered court in the hinterlands of Paquibato district, Davao City.

The grenade attack injured 41 civilians of which two are in critical condition. The grenade thrower apparently lobbed the grenade at the nearby Army detachment but bounced off the outpost’s netting and landed at the nearby covered court where many people were watching a circus performance during the town fiesta.

The Army in a statement said that the same method of attack bears much resemblance to those committed by the New Peoples’ Army. There were four other similar incidents recorded in the past.

The first incident happened last October 21, 2010  in Brgy Dalisay, Panabo City. The grenade was thrown targeting the headquarters of 69th Infantry Battalion (69IB).The second attack was on November 11, 2011 in Brgy San Roque, Panabo City targeting the Peace and Development Team of 69IB,two  soldiers, one militiaman and two civilians were wounded.

The third and fourth attacks occurred in Barangay Pandaitan, Paquibato, Davao City on July 14, 2012 and on July 23, 2012.

“The perpetrators of these atrocities act should be condemned and justice should be done for the innocent civilians who suffered”, said Lt.Col Lyndon Paniza, 10th Infantry Division spokesman.

Lt. Col Paniza further added that the Army is providing support to the Philippine National Police and other concerned government agencies in their investigation of this incident. (PIA 11/RG Alama)
