Safe relocation sites for Pablo-affected areas in Davao a priority-PNoy

DAVAO CITY, Feb 7 (PIA XI) -- President Aquino said government is focused on looking for safe relocation sites for typhoon Pablo-affected communities in the three Davao provinces as part of its long-term rehabilitation program.

Aquino, who was in the city Tuesday to address the 2013 Philippines Development Forum, said the Mines and GeoSciences Bureau is expected to come up with a list of geo-hazard or build and no-build zones that are unsafe to flooding and landslides. The priority of government, he said, is to help those living in riverside communities especially in the Davao area and,

“We will not be able to help them if we leave them in high-risk areas." Aquino said continuous relief operations are being conducted for 140,000 families or “75 percent of the total affected families.” Up to 139,798 families are also getting P10,000 each under the Cash-for-Work program.

“The Core Shelter Program has benefited 39,762 families while livelihood programs have also benefited 139,798 families,” Aquino said. The bottomline, he said, is that the weather patterns are changing and we have to be prepared. “Walang iwanan lalo na sa may nakatuong peligro,” Aquino said.

And while he admitted the difficulty of looking for funds to relocate these people, he said “if there’s a will there’s a way.”(lac-PIA 11)
