DAVAO CITY, October 1 (PIA)-A top military commander has predicted a relatively peaceful conduct of election-related activities in Davao Region up to the election day on May 13, 2013.
Brig. General Ariel Bernardo, commander of the 10th Infantry Battalion said the region has no direct threat to peace and security related to election activities based on their latest monitoring.
He said that though the police has been given the lead role in keeping the peace during elections, the military is prepared to render its assistance on peacekeeping when it is needed.
“Based on our own assessment, there is no direct threat to peace especially in the holding of election-related activities in the region,” Bernardo said.
He said that they are also studying certain provinces where election-related violent incidents happened in the past.
Bernardo said there are also provinces like Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur which may had active opposition among political candidates in the past but there was no violence.
“At this point in time, we cannot see the possibility of occurrence of election-related-violent incidents, but we continue to monitor the situation by looking at the history of political violence in several areas of the region,” he said. (PIA 11/ Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
