Vigilance key in combating NPA extortion-Army


CAMP PANACAN, Davao City, October 1 (PIA)-A military officer lauded the residents of Barangay Telafas, Columbio, Sultan Kudarat for their vigilance in alerting local authorities about the presence of the rebels in the area which resulted to a 45-minute firefight leading to the death of two rebels and the arrest of one member dawn on Saturday.

Lt. Colonel Alexis Noel Bravo, commanding officer of the 27th Infantry Battalion said the timely information sent by the residents was enough for authorities to respond promptly.

He said the incident happened 3:20 am on September 29, after the residents complained about the presence of armed men collecting money from the farmers.
“The people were already fed up with the lies and extortion activities of the rebels”, Bravo said. He said the  identities of the two fatalities have yet to be established.

Bravo identified the captive as Renato Arema who was turned over immediately to the Columbio police for further investigation.

Soldiers recovered one Garand rifle and one M-79 grenade launcher during the clearing operation.

He said  Corporal Hajimanor Amino was hit in the  right ankle and is currently recuperating in a local hospital.
